2017 was the year I went all in and invested heavily in myself and encourage you to do the same in 2018.
Because the more you focus on your inner world the more it will reflect in your outer world.
After attending Tony Robbins, “Unleash the Power Within” it became clear how important it is to invest in yourself and never stop learning.
Here are the 16 things I learned after walking on fire with Tony Robbins.
Training Never Stops
Why is it that when most people graduate they stop learning?
My guess is that we are taught to dread education and learning. We are forced to learn a lot of pointless subjects that will have zero real-world use. The problem is that it creates a habit where people don’t like learning.
This is why the average American watches 4.3 hours of TV per day and only reads a few books a year (at most).
But learning shouldn’t end when you throw your graduation cap — it should just begin.

Focus on Your State
While some people think Tony Robbins is a positive hype man he actually hates “positive thinking.” Instead, he focuses on staying in a peak state. Getting and maintaining a peak state is very different than positive thinking.
Start by changing….
- Physiology — Do you feel better when you are walking with your chin up and chest out or slumped down in your chair? Obviously the first, your feelings are directly related to your movement. Next time you find yourself in a bad mood realize what your body is doing and change it! Focus on taking deep breaths, go for a walk, or force yourself to smile.
- Language — Your brain is always listening to what you say, both internally and to others. Choose your words wisely and be aware of the questions you are asking yourself.
- Focus — As Tony said, “Focus goes where energy flows.” Don’t focus on problems only the solutions.
Little Adjustments = BIG Changes
Tony gave a golfing example that most people can easily relate, even if you’re not Tiger Woods. If the club hits the ball even 2 millimeters off it can go 10–30 yards offline. The same goes for your life.
One small adjustment can make all the difference in any area of life. If you’re a writer one tweak to your headlines and you might have an article go viral. If you’re trying to lose weight one new fitness routine could help you finally create lasting change.
Master Your Mornings
Morning routines are one of the easiest ways to make lasting change and drastically improve your life.

Everyone will have a different routine — it’s important to find what works for you. Here is a quick morning routine Tony refers to as “priming.” As he said,
“If you don’t have 10 minutes for yourself you don’t have a life.”
- Focus on 3 things you are grateful for (1 minute each).
- Think about 3 things you want to create. Envision your goals as already complete. (1 min each)
- Practice “Breath of Fire” — 3 sets of 30 seconds each. Once you change your breathing you will change your physiology and give yourself energy for the day.
The 80/20 Of Success
If you’re unfamiliar with the 80/20 rule (known as the Pareto Principle) it basically says that for many events roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.
80% of your income is earned from 20% of the work that you complete.
The same goes for success.
As Tony said, “Success in life is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics.”
Playing Small Doesn’t Make People Bigger
Have you ever found yourself in a great mood until you run into someone in your life where you feel like you have to take it down a notch? I know I have and it sucks.
Don’t let anyone dictate your mood. Don’t sink to their level to make them feel better. Create the rule in your life that you will never change your mood to match someone else’s unless you are going up.
Success Leaves Clues
Chances are, whatever you want to achieve someone has already done it in some capacity or another. Model these people to accelerate your own success. There is no need to reinvent the wheel.
If you want to create an epic website, reach out to people you admire and ask what they did. Buy their course, watch their videos, and find ways to get them to mentor you.
If you want to lose 30 pounds find someone who has already done it. Figure out what they ate, how often they exercised, and if they had a trainer.
Find a coach or mentor to help speed things up!
Don’t Forget the Law of Familiarity
Everyone has been guilty of this at some point in their lives. The Law of Familiarity states that “Things that form patterns that are familiar or meaningful are likely to be grounded together.”
Don’t take things you love in your life for granted. Your spouse, dog, parents, car, health, etc. Practice gratitude every single day, tell people you love them, buy your dog the biggest treat you can find.
Spoil the people you love — never take them for granted just because you see them on a consistent basis.
Progress = Happiness
Whether you are $30,000 in debt or worth a $1 million dollars, people want to feel like they are progressing in life. Think about the last time you were frustrated or upset with where your life was…you probably felt “stuck” right?
That is totally natural, human beings want to make progress, regardless of where you are in life. Try to do something every single day that helps you progress towards your goals.
Don’t let your happiness depend on others, instead strive to make progress on yourself and your goals. This will allow you to be better at work, with relationships, friends, and increase your overall happiness.
Suffering Breeds Suffering
Have you ever complained, whined or moped around and a situation magically got better? I’m guessing no…
Don’t stay in a state of suffering, it will only bring more into your life. Life isn’t perfect…people will let you down, accidents will happen, and you will make mistakes. The next time something happens to make you sad, mad, fearful or angry give yourself 60–90 seconds. Understand why it made you mad and focus on how you can fix it.
Change your physiology by going for a short walk, taking some deep breaths and focus on something you are grateful for in your life. You can’t be grateful & suffer at the same time — its impossible.

Your Past Doesn’t Equal Your Future
You’re not one moment in your past. You will never create a successful future if you’re always dwelling on the past.
If you made a mistake and you are still alive you can fix it. Some of the most successful people in the world had the hardest, most extremely difficult pasts ever.
Guard Your Inner Circle
Your life is a direct reflection of your peer group in almost any area.
As T. Harv Eker said in “The Millionaire Mind”, “Most people earn within 20 percent of the average income of their closest friends.”
Your network is your net worth.” — Jim Rohn
If you surround yourself with positive, ambitious, and wealthy people you will become one of them. On the other hand, if you hang out with broke, pessimistic and negative people you will become one of them.
Surround yourself with people who lift you up — your happiness, attitude and bank account will thank you.
Be Your Own Biggest Fan
When’s the last time you patted yourself on the back or clapped for something awesome you did or accomplished? Tony had us do this during the seminar and found it extremely powerful.
The next time you reach a goal, kick ass in a meeting or nail a speech applaud, clap, and love yourself. You have to become your own biggest fan! This reaction will affirm to your mind that you are on the right track and will want to replicate these feelings in the future.
Only Compare Yourself to Yourself
It’s so easy to compare yourself to other people you work with, went to school with, or lifelong friends. While it might inspire you occasionally, constant comparison with others will lead to an unfulfilling life.
The only person you should ever compare yourself to is your former self.
Focus on Fulfillment
“Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” — Tony Robbins
Tony gave a chilling speech about success vs. fulfillment in regards to Robin Williams suicide. You can watch it here as well.
It’s possible to be successful and miserable, it happens to people all the time. Don’t get so caught up in being successful that you forget to focus on what fulfills you as well.
Grow to Give
Tony is a huge giver as someone once fed his family as a kid which changed his life forever. He now feeds millions of people each year through his foundations and other charitable efforts.
The reason you should focus on growth is that once you grow you give. The biggest philanthropists in the world are also the richest. Not only can you help contribute money but other resources and connections to help change more lives.
