The History of the 5-Second Rule
The creator, Mel Robbins, didn’t set out to create this rule it basically found her. At 45 years old she was in a tough place.
Her marriage was crumbling, she was drinking too much, and had switched professions so much she was out of a job. Things were so bad with her husband’s business that there was a lien on the house and unknowingly had used every cent of the kid’s college tuition.
It was at rock bottom that Mel stumbled upon the 5-Second Rule when she was watching TV. She said she knew what she was supposed to do to change her life but couldn’t get the motivation to make it happen. As she was watching TV she saw a commercial of a NASA spaceship taking off.
That was her moment, the countdown. If you’ve watched Armageddon or Apollo 13 you know the epicness of a spaceship countdown.
She decided to use this 5-4-3-2-1 countdown in her life the very next morning. She knew needed to get up early to start making calls on jobs but kept sleeping in.
But the next morning Mel woke up and instead of hitting snooze as she always did she counted backward 5-4-3-2-1 and got out of bed. She couldn’t believe it, she finally got out of bed when her alarm clock went off and started to change her life.
The Science of the 5-Second Rule
After extensive research for her book she learned that when you count backward, you mentally shift the gears in your mind. You interrupt your way of thinking!
As Mel said, “The counting distracts you from your excuses and focused your mind on moving in a new direction. When you physically move instead of stopping to think, your physiology change and your mind falls in line.”
This is known as a starting ritual and helps you begin to change your behavior.
Does It Actually Work?
You might be thinking, that is corny as hell…don’t worry, Mel Robbins agrees.
She knows the premise of the idea is basic but she has used reach new levels of success she had never imagined. After discovering the 5-second rule Mel has gone on to become a best-selling author of “The 5-Second Rule” and most sought out speakers in the world.
I was able to meet her in person at Success Live seminar and absolutely love her passion, energy, and belief. She truly wants to help others improve their lives, no matter how good or bad they are this book and her work can help.
How to Use the 5-Second Rule
While I highly recommend reading the book from cover to cover (several times maybe) I want to show you how to start using this rule immediately.
Remember, you are only five seconds away from changing your life forever. The 5-Second Rule has the potential to help you change any area of your life.
The reason she started using it is that she couldn’t get herself to do things she knew she needed to do. Does this sound familiar?
How many times do you find yourself knowing what you need to do but can’t get yourself to do it? Things like…
- Cleaning the house
- Going to the gym so you can lose weight
- Sending that email or making that call
- Setting up a retirement fund
- Eating less food (or drinking less alcohol)
and so many other things that you constantly procrastinate in your life.
What Should You Use The 5-Second Rule For?
The 5-second rule will help you start doing the little things that will eventually help you become successful. But it can also help when you are having a negative thought, stop worrying and help you do whatever is scaring you.
Use the 5-Second Rule Today
The next time you find yourself saying “I should” but don’t end up doing it count backward 5-4-3-2-1 and take action. Start moving, change your physiology!
You will never feel motivated to go to the gym if you haven’t gone in a year. Or cleaning up your resume to find a job you actually like going to.
But if you keep programming your mind away from acting you will create a habit of not following through. This will teach your brain that it really isn’t that important and can affect other areas of your life.
Use the 5-second rule as a simple tool to take back control of your life.
As Mel said, “If you only ever did the things you don’t want to do, you’d have everything you’ve ever wanted.”
Learn to transform your life work and confidence with everyday courage!
