Jack Canfield Success Principles
Could you imagine going to 100 different publishers to get your book published and be turned down every single time?
Would you be able to keep grinding and pursuing a publisher or would you give up when it got tough?
What if, on top of the 100 plus publishers telling you no your book agent then drops you…would you still keep at it?
Honestly, that is a tough question and to keep going is a total belief that your book is life-changing and will help millions.
Luckily, Jack Canfield persisted. His book went on to sell over 500 million copies and spurn a whole series of books.
Needless to say, Jack is set up for life. While these books are great he also published another book that is a classic. Of all the Jack Canfield books, this is my favorite.
The book is titled “The Success Principles” and is an absolutely incredible read. I’d love to review each of the 67 principles but the post would be as long as the actual book.
Top 10 Success Principles by Jack Canfield
1. Believe In Yourself
If you want to make a change in your life to be more successful, in any specific area, you have to believe it can happen. Without belief in yourself, it’s unlikely you will ever fully commit to making a change.
Jack says it’s best, “Don’t ever let someone else tell you what you are not capable of. With training, determination and hard work you eventually you anything you set your mind to. Remember your beliefs are a choice.”
Whether you want to create a business, run a marathon, completely or switch careers to follow your passion believe you can do it.
Negative thinking working 100% of the time — think positive and believe you can succeed.
2. Unleash the Power of Goal-Setting
I’m sure you’ve heard how important it is to set goals — you’ve probably heard it so many times you think it might even be BS or cliche.
I know I once thought this until I read a goal setting study about 267 individuals from the age of 23-72. They were broken up into four groups:
- Think about goals
- Write down goals (and think about them)
- Share goals with a friend (as well as thinking and writing them down)
- Weekly progress report to a friend (as well as thinking, writing, and sharing).
Group four averaged 76% completion while group one was 43%, two was 56%, and three was 64% achievement.
If you want to be successful and make changes it’s so important to write goals, share them with friends, and look at them every day.
I recommend the book just from this chapter alone as it breaks down, in detail, even more examples and way to consistently achieve your goals.
3. Act As If
As Jack says, “One of the great strategies for success is to act as if you already are where you want to be.“This means thinking like, talking like, dressing like, acting like and feeling like the person who has already achieved your goal.”
If you want a promotion at work act like you already are that position by showing up, kicking ass, and showing others you are ready for it. If you want to be a Youtube star or entrepreneur, constantly visualize yourself doing amazing things.
The more you focus on something the more likely you are to manifest it into your life.
Don’t Fear Failure
How often do you want to try or learn something new but start to feel fear?
It could be fear of failure, fear of rejection or fear of looking stupid. Most people stop at fear and let fear control your dreams. Don’t let fear guide your life, learn to overcome fear. Choose to go forward when you see fear and take massive action.
If you want to achieve greatness you will have to move forward when you are scared. As Les Brown says, “Fear is nothing more than false evidence appearing real.”
If you are scared of anything, face your fear and go after it:
- Fear of heights? Go skydiving
- Fear of public speaking? Sign up for Toastmasters
- Fear of water? Take a swim class
You don’t want to end up later in life regretting not doing something because of fear of failure or looking stupid.Face your fears head on and once you do you’ll be amazed how much your confidence grows.
5. Success Leaves Clues
Maybe my all-time favorite Tony Robbins quote, “Success leaves clues.”
What does it mean?
Almost everything you want to do has probably been done by someone already. Whether you want to lose 50 pounds, become financially independent, start a blog, or travel the world full-time.
Instead of finding out how to succeed on your own, seek out people who have already done what you want to do. Find a teacher, coach, Youtube video or book to help you get closer to your goals.
6. Fuel Your Success With Passion & Enthusiasm
I fully believe that following your passion(s) is one of the easiest ways to live an extraordinary life.
As Jack says, “Passion is something within you that provides the continual enthusiasm, focus, and energy you need to succeed.”
I’m sure you’ve met people who are super passionate about their career or life…do they tend to be negative and pessimistic or filled with energy, positivity, and optimism?
Clearly, they are so passionate about what they do they are radiating energy.
I wrote about how Tom Bilyeu talks about the importance of passion in your life.
It may not always be easy to know what you like to do. Instead, try everything to find out what you are passionate about so you can enjoy life to the fullest.
7. Develop 4 New Success Habits a Year
Instead of making New Year’s Resolutions this year try to develop four new successful habits. Habits control our lives and actions roughly 90% of the time.
Focus on creating good habits to help you become successful and reach your goals.
Here are some good ideas from the Success Principles;
- Stop paying bills at the last minute
- Forgetting people’s names within seconds of meeting them (I’m super guilty of this — 2018 habit!)
- Sleeping in too late and rushing to work
- Pushing off exercise until after work….and never going
- Not setting goals
- Forgetting to take lunch to work
By setting a goal of four new habits each year it allows you to introduce one each quarter. For more habits check out my book with over 20 of the top success habits here.
8. You Get What You Focus On
I’m sure you’ve noticed in life that you get what you focus on. If you’re focusing all of what you don’t have it tends to happen more. But if you focus on things you want, they will begin to enter your life.
Decide to Be Wealthy
As Jack said, “If you want wealth, you must decide now from the deepest place in your heart to have wealth in your life — without yet worrying about how or if it’s possible.”
If you want to earn $1 million or $100 million there is no right answer.
- What is your ideal net worth?
- How much are you earning?
- How much do you save and invest?
- What kind of house do you live in? What type of car do you drive?
- When will you retire?
Use the previous principle, act as if, to visualize your ideal financial life and set goals to get started.
Jack (and myself) also recommend learning more about money to help better your financial situation. Check out these five books that helped change my finances here.
9. Pay Yourself First
As the great, billionaire investor Warren Buffet said, “Do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving.”
Always pay yourself first with automatic deductions to your 401K, Roth IRA, or saving accounts.
The more (and earlier) you save the more you will be able to take advantage of compound interest. Learn more about compound interest here.
10. Give More to Get More
This last principle is pretty simple…as you make money you should always continue to give back and help others in need.
Buy The Success Principles
These ten principles are a mere preview of what the book entails. It is, by far, the most comprehensive book I’ve read to help you be successful in life.
Success is different for everyone, don’t feel like you need to start a business, earn $10 million or save the world to be successful. As long as you’re living and creating the life you want that is perfect.
As long as you’re living and creating the life you want that is perfect.
Are you currently doing any of these? Have you thought about them but haven’t followed through yet?
