Medium is a no fuss content platform where writers can publish their content. There is both a free version and a $5/month paid version. I highly recommend the $5/month paid version as it will open the ‘doors’ for your content to be seen by more people.
As well as with the low cost membership, you get the opportunity to apply to submit your writing to Medium publications – where your content can be seen by many more people.
2 Reasons I Love Writing on Medium
I love writing on Medium.com for these two reasons:
1. You Can Start Writing Immediately
2. Medium Gets 100 million Views a Month
Both of these are huge reasons for writers to embrace being on Medium. Medium.com continues to grow its monthly readers and because of this content on the platform gets ranked on Google.
Some freelance writers like Anthony Moore or Benjamin Hardy started writing businesses by submitting articles on Medium first and they they parlayed that into other online success. There is so much opportunity for writers on this growing platform.
What to Write about On Medium.com
There is a lot of opportunity to write on Medium in a variety of niches and industries! The best part is you do not have to worry about writing for a client; you can choose whatever you want to explore and write about that. From science tech to relationships, there is a category topic for everything.
Writing on Medium is very straightforward. You don’t need to worry about formatting or SEO – you can start writing immediately after you create an account. If you have a paid account you can start applying to other publications to gain even more traction! Some publications are even syndicated by larger media outlets, which means you could even have the opportunity to attract a larger audience to your article.
How I Got Ranked on Google with An Article on Medium
Google ranks content on Medium high, which is great if you do not want worry about SEO but still want to gain traction in search engines.
I was able to Google rank my Medium article about leaving my 9 to 5 just by submitting the article to a high traffic Medium publication. The article has received 30,000 views and continues to receive comments and ‘claps’. If you visit my profile on Medium you can view all my articles – both those submitted to publications and those written with the purpose of publishing to my own account.
I love writing on Medium and know you will too! Stay tuned as we dive into more tactics on how to find success on Medium.

Michael: 00:01 You are listening to inspire your success podcast, episode number 52 and today’s topic is should you write on medium, I’ll cover the ins and outs of this growing platform that gets 100 million monthly views coming up. Welcome back to inspire your success. This is your host Michael Leonard. And on today’s writing Wednesday edition, we’re going to talk about if you should write on medium.com and as I tease a little bit on the intro, there is that medium is a beast. This thing just keeps growing. So a little spoiler alert, I would say you, a lot of people probably should and maybe a few people shouldn’t. We’ll talk about that here in more in just a second. But at the end of the day, medium is a great way for people to actually find out about your writing and help you make money in a few different ways as well. So we’ll have a lot more information on medium and coming out.
Michael: 01:10 Uh, just because there’s just a ton to talk about. What I kind of wanted to give you the general overview of what it is, how it works and how you can get started. So if you don’t know, medium.com is a platform where you can basically go on, create an account and if you want you could actually publish your foes first post today. So it is a free platform. They do have a $5 a month membership, uh, where you can join the medium. A monthly member was at medium partner program, which is something that I recently did and it is a great $5 investment because one, it’s only $5. I mean what else has, I mean a cup of coffee at Starbucks is like six bucks, right? So having $5 there is really easy, but then you can read all the stories because they do have both free and locked stories.
Michael: 01:58 But also you can publish stories only for the paying members. And then if people actually like this stuff and clap on it as they call it, you actually can make money from it. So there is a lot of great things on there. So basically with medium though, you actually go on, you create an account, either do the free or the paid. Like I said, I highly suggest you do that $5 a month. And then from there you can basically just start publishing. And this is one of the main reasons I think that so many people should start on medium is because you don’t have to go and build a website, you don’t have to do any tech stuff. You, you get to really focus on writing. And that’s what I love is because you know sometimes like blogging for example, you don’t actually get to write very much.
Michael: 02:43 You’re, you’re doing all this other stuff, you’re getting widgets and plugins and working on SEO and building out your images and your homepage and you know, getting all this other stuff and you don’t actually get to focus on writing. But one of the things about medium is that you don’t have to worry about any of that. And probably one of the biggest things for me is it is a clean platform. Meaning there’s no ads. There’s like literally only the image, like a couple images. I mean, it is just gorgeous. Like when you start writing on there, it’s just a white blank sheet. I mean it is super easy to get started and that’s what I love is that it’s just, it doesn’t require much because I find that with a lot of writers, they get in their head and then they, you know, think about all these other things they need to do and building a writing website or you know, blogging and all this, you know, just stuff and it seems heavy.
Michael: 03:31 And so with medium I feel like it’s very light, very easy, very approachable. You can literally start writing today. So I’d say that’s one of the biggest things. Of course. The second thing is like a tease in the intro is they get 100 million views, uh, to the platform almost a month. So I mean that is just crazy. Like those are huge numbers and the platform continues to grow. Like it just keeps getting a lot more users to it. I think, again, it’s because there’s a lot of great topics on there. Um, you can again get started very easily. There’s a lot of great writers. I mean, it’s just, there’s so many wins on there. To me, I mean, I know several people that have built huge businesses just from their medium, uh, writing and then parlayed that into courses, coaching book deals and things like that. And even one of those people was Anthony Moore who’s been on this podcast twice where he talked about what it was like to make his fulltime income on medium and writing online.
Michael: 04:26 And then a second episode was all about getting his book deal. So really cool stories. And then again, there’s all kinds of other people. Like one of my other mentors, Benjamin Hardy is the number one writer on medium. He doesn’t write on there anymore, but he had hundreds of millions of views. I mean, it was insane how much, uh, he got from it and he got that into a book deal. He has, you know, a thriving business now because of it. And again, he’s an unbelievable writer. So I don’t want you to think that you don’t have to be a good writer, of course, but there’s just so much opportunity. So again, the two biggest things for me is that it’s growing and it’s easy to get started. So those are a couple of things that I really, really like about it. But then there’s some other things.
Michael: 05:06 So I really didn’t publish on there in 2019 very much. I think I only published one or two articles because I was really focused on my client work and I was growing that side of my business and I was working on growing my coaching side and my online courses and things like that. So I actually didn’t spend as much time on there. But in 2020 that is one of my biggest focuses is crushing it on medium because again, there is a ton of opportunity, but there’s just some really good writing and I feel very creative and you don’t really have to, you know, worry about writing for anyone else, which is kind of fun. So you can mix it up and you can have different topics and you can do different things. But there is literally, you know, basically a category or a niche for everything on there.
Michael: 05:46 I mean, whether it’s a relationships, personal growth, motivation, business, marketing, like they have all kinds of different topics on there. So make sure you go on and just take a look at, you know, medium and just see what kind of things are out there. Because there’s science tech, I mean like there is literally different things for everyone on there. And that’s again one of the reasons I think the platform continues to grow. So I asked you like, what do you think that you want to write about that you think, man, I really want to write about it but I just don’t really have a specific place or maybe it’s not on my writing website or it’s not in my niche or my clients don’t want that. And that can be one of your outlets is medium, is that you can do it and you don’t have to really worry about certain things like SEO and, and you know, all this other formatting.
Michael: 06:33 Like it’s pretty straightforward. You literally just type, make some headings, you can add some images, you know, things like that. But you can get started and you can publish very frequently. So if you’re someone that likes to write a lot, you can definitely do that. So we’ll talk more about like individual writing tips as well on medium in a different episode. But just remember that there is a lot of opportunity on there. And one thing that I mentioned too is that you don’t really have to worry about SEO, but since um, medium is so popular is that their content ranks very high in Google. So a good example is, let me just make sure here. So if you go on to Google, if you type in quit nine to five, the first thing here that comes up is nine lessons after leaving my a hundred thousand plus job, nine to five to live my dreams.
Michael: 07:23 That is my article. And I actually didn’t ever publish that thinking it would rank and anywhere on Google. I was just trying to share some of my stuff on there. And this thing ended up ranking as either one or two pretty much consistently in Google search results. And this thing gets tons of views. I mean, I think it was the last time I looked here, gosh, it was like at like 30,000 views or something like that, which is just crazy. And so I’ve gotten people on my email list, I’ve gotten core students, I’ve got coaching students, I’ve got, you know, just people I can help worldwide that you know, are Googling like, Oh man, I want to quit my nine to five. Like what can I do? And uh, you know, it ended up ranking really high because it got a lot of article, um, claps.
Michael: 08:05 It got a lot of comments, things like that. And I never really knew that was going to happen. It didn’t happen instantly. It took maybe four or five months actually ranking Google. But now it consistently provides leads to my business all the time. So again, that’s another side benefit is that if you write an article that gets some love and get some good engagement is that Google is really enjoying medium I guess because they are such a popular website. So it will also help you with SEO. And then the last thing I wanted to talk about, like with medium is you can do two different things. So you can actually submit articles, you know, under your own name and just on your own personal profile. Or you can actually submit articles to publications and publications or how you’re going to get in front of a lot more eyes.
Michael: 08:50 Because like for example, I only have like 600 or 700 followers at this time, but I get tons of readers. I mean I’ve had 4,500 views in the last 30 days just at the time of this recording. But the reason I’m able to get so many people to read my stuff, even though I don’t have a huge follower base is because I publish articles in publications, and if you don’t know what that means, basically like if you go on my [email protected]/Iam MichaelLeonard and we’ll link to that in the show notes. If you go on there and you see that I publish articles in different publications, like the writing cooperative and the post-grads survival guide and um, see where the, um, the ascent, like all these different ones that I’ve published because they have their own reader base. So basically you have to apply to these.
Michael: 09:41 It’s not paid or anything. You have to just make sure you’re following their guidelines and writing the kind of content they want. But your articles can get in front of so many more eyes. So again, not only can you build an email list from it, get coaching, get courses, get clients, you know, you can also get big publications because a lot of times these publications are syndicated to business insider and Yahoo and all these other big websites. So it’s a great way to build a name for yourself and just to get yourself out there, even if you don’t have any tech experience, but you just want to focus on writing. So again, there’s a lot more I can talk about with medium, but I just want to give you a quick overview to understand what is medium. And if you should get started because I think it’s a huge opportunity in 2020.
Michael: 10:26 Um, and like I said, I’ve had several people on the podcast just talk about how much they’ve crushed it. And then one of the top writers, like I said, Benjamin Hardy is going to be on the show here in a few months. So I’m very, very excited about that as well. So hopefully that clears it up a little bit. Again, you can go on medium.com you know, create a profile. I’ll start messing around. I’ll link to mine in the show notes so that way you can take a look at mine. Again, nothing crazy about it. It’s really for you to show off your writing skills and get in front of an audience and help them with whatever you want to write about. So take a look on there and maybe find something and then set a goal. Maybe it’s one article a week or one article a month, whatever it is, do something to get yourself out there because all it takes is one reader to see it or one editor or one article go viral or get syndicated.
Michael: 11:10 That can change everything for you and your business. So again, if you’re already really stacked with clients and you have tons going on, you know, don’t feel like you need to do this, but if you’re just getting started and aren’t really sure where to go, I think this is an awesome starting point without having to create a blog or even a writing website. So again, hopefully this stuff is helpful for you. I’m really excited about it. I think medium’s going to be a massive, uh, emphasis for me in 2020 and again, if you have any questions on it, shoot me an email always at Michael. Email [email protected] So thanks again for tuning in today. And as always, I hope you have an Epic day.
