Have you ever had a year that has changed your life entirely?
It could have been making a major career move, moving across the country or taking some major action to change your life.
Events and years like this are scary, terrifying, and usually incredibly rewarding. We are taken out of our comfort zones and forced to adapt. That’s where the magic happens.
As Tom Bilyeu said, “Humans are the ultimate adaption machines.
2017 will always be that year for me.
After attending a Tony Robbins seminar in March I realized that once you change your mind your life will never be the same.
You’ll stop settling and start living. You will understand what it takes to become the version of yourself you’ve always envisioned.
Some people go their whole lives never making any major change to their and accept all the mediocrity. They accept the same job, roughly the same income, same body, and same general level of happiness.
Essentially, they are zombies in the Walking Dead.
But as the inevitable 2018 New Year’s resolutions start popping up I encourage you to not make a single resolution. Instead, commit to changing your life, resolutions never last.
You can never be too successful, no matter where you are in your life. It’s ironic that often the most successful people (Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Marc Cuban, Oprah) are the ones who always striving for more.
Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla and Space X, is another perfect example. He has billions of dollars yet he continues to push himself to new levels. Now he’s trying to get us to live on Mars!
On Mars!? How crazy is that!???
It shows that once you realize your potential, create a vision, and won’t take no for an answer you can literally do anything.
While I’m not saying you need to colonize Mars before Elon, I am saying 2018 can be your year.
The year where you literally change your life and quit settling.
Here are 17 things I learned in 2017 that will help you make 2018 your best year ever:
Read — A Lot
This isn’t some hack or secret, reading is a daily habit of the most successful people on the planet. Warren Buffett reads upward of five hours per day! Bill Gates reads at least a book per week and top CEO’s average 60 books per year.
I love Netflix as much, if not more than most, but I made reading a priority in 2017. I’ve read over 50 books and have another 50 I’ve bought and are sitting on my bookcase. Seriously, I bought over 100 books this year and have another 200 on my Amazon wishlist.
As Tony Robbins said, “Leaders are readers.” You don’t need to start reading a book per week but shoot for at least one per month and read a little every single day. Create a habit of reading so you reach for the book instead of the remote.
Don’t worry, you can still watch Netflix.

Start Listening to Podcasts
We live in the best era ever thanks to the internet! Within seconds you can listen to any podcast in the world.
Podcasts are an incredible way to learn something new in a different style than reading or watching. Podcasts are great for the commute, cardio in the gym, or something to have on in the background at home.

Watch Goalcast Motivational Videos
Goalcast is one of my favorite sites for inspiring, uplifting, and motivational content.
They have quick, informative and motivating videos to teach you how successful people like Oprah, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Steve Jobs became successful.
Watch one of these videos every day, no excuses. Who doesn’t have five minutes each day?
Wake Up Earlier
Each year I seem to get up earlier but think I’ve found my sweet spot at 445am. No, I’m not asking you to wake up that early.
Everywhere you read people recommend getting up early….why?
We all have the same 24 hours — whether you’re the president, billionaire, or Batman.
When you wake up early you can own your morning, start the day focusing on things you like to do, and not be rushed. If you own your mornings you will own the day.
The mornings are a great time to hit the gym so you don’t skip it later. Start getting up 15-30 minutes early. Work your way up to where you want to be and you will watch your life change.
Attend a Seminar
In my short 30 years of being alive, I hadn’t attended a seminar until I was 28 and a half year old. I remember the exact day as it was a one-day event here in Phoenix.
I love seminars because they are fully immersive, unlike reading, watching a video, or listening to a podcast.
Personally, I’ve found the most benefit of seminars than any other form of learning. You get to meet like-minded people, be 100% present while learning, and retain more information.
I personally recommend any Tony Robbins event, especially Unleash the Power Within. This seminar was life changing for me and the other 9,000 people in attendance.

My biggest piece of advice is to attend at least one seminar per year. I would also recommend going alone as you will be forced to exit your comfort zone, meet new people, and be 100% committed to your development.
Start a Side Hustle
44 million people side hustle each year in the US. The gig economy and side hustles are here to stay.
Side hustles are great for so many reasons….
- New stream of income
- Finding a way to do work you care about
- Quick way to make money
- Possibly change your life…..
Stop Waiting Until Monday
It’s so easy to push everything off until Monday. I stopped this habit in 2017 and decided to not live my life around a thousand-year-old calendar.
If you want to change something, start today — don’t wait until Monday!
Get the Losers Out of Your Life
You are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. IF someone isn’t making you stronger, they are making you weaker.” – Tim Ferris
It’s hard to stop hanging out with people you like but sometimes it’s necessary. We all have friends who are fun or might be a good time but know they aren’t helping us succeed.
Make 2018 a priority to hang out with winners.
Surround yourself with positive, goal-oriented, and supportive people.
Not only will your mood change your income will as well.
Automate Your Finances
Automating is one of the easiest ways to manage your money.
After reading Ramit Sethi’s, “I Will Teach You to be Rich” I started automating everything. From my mortgage, car payment, savings, investments, and bills.
Start automating your finances to reach your financial goals and not be tempted by your willpower to buy everything on Amazon.
Some people might scoff and think meditation is total BS. That was me 100000%.
I thought it would be dumb, pointless, and boring.
But I’ve been at it for 4 months now and absolutely love it. Part of waking up earlier is that you can enjoy the quiet time alone. Just you and your thoughts.
I recommend a guided app like Headspace — they have options from 10-30 minute sessions. This is a great way to start your day grounded and ready for the challenges that will inevitably come your way.
Spend Time Doing Nothing
How often do you sit and doing nothing without your phone? Do you ever go for a walk or hike and do absolutely nothing but think?
For me, it was never.
I felt I always had to be doing something or I was wasting time until I watched this Lewis Howes episode with Manoush Zomordi.
You can’t get great ideas by always being on your Facebook feed or scrolling through your phone. Turn off your electronics and focus on being with your thoughts — you’ll be surprised how many great ideas will come to you!
Learn the Art of Visualizations
After attending five seminars, reading 50 books, and listening to countless podcast episodes I have found a common theme — visualizations.
Whether it’s a professional athlete, top CEO, or someone who came from nothing….most, if not all, have used visualization in some form or another.
As the great Magic Johnson said, “If you can dream it you can become it.”
So you’re getting up earlier in 2018 right?
Another great part of your morning routine is to wake up and write in a journal. It doesn’t matter if you’re a writer like me or not, it’s an amazing exercise to get your thoughts on paper.
As soon as you wake up to write one page in a journal. It could be about anything!
From your relationships, work, goals, problems, successes…literally anything!
I recommend doing it first thing in the morning as your brain is at peak levels of activity. While you may feel sleep your subconscious mind is wide awake.
Your subconscious mind doesn’t ever sleep or turn off. So when you’re sleeping your subconscious brain is working with your thoughts…hopefully they are good ones! It is trying to help you solve problems that you are discussing or thinking about.
Write each morning and go back to your journals weekly. Notice if there is a consistent theme or can find something to help you solve a problem.
In 2017 I made it a priority to be more grateful every single day.
It’s so easy to get caught looking ahead, always wanting more. Wanting more money, newer car, house, more success or whatever it is.
When in reality if you are more grateful each day you will be more abundance than you would from any new car or house.
Spend time being grateful for your family, friends, health, and the opportunity that exists in this world.
Turn Off Your Phone
Turning off your phone will be hard for most people…..But I promise it won’t kill you.
Occasionally, turn off or airplane mode your phone. Spend time working or doing something undistracted with 100% focus.
We live in a world that is always pushing us notifications, emails, and updates. Often times it’s more of a distraction than a benefit. It’s probably the reason we check our phone over 50 times per day!
Develop Your Passion
I’ve found more fulfillment in the last six months than I had in the past six years since going all in on my passions.
If you know my story I left my 6-figure job to pursue writing and golf full-time. I’m not asking you to do the same.
But I can’t recommend enough spending time doing stuff you love. Be curious and start learning about things you want.
Whether it’s learning to fly a plane, start a blog, or taking a cooking class.
You never know what you are passionate about until you start trying new activities.
Spend More Time With Family
I’m extremely fortunate for my amazing parents and family. We have gotten to spend a lot of time together and seems like even more in 2017, which has been amazing!
I read that 80% of the time you spend with your parents happens by the time you’re 18. While it makes sense it’s also hard to think about.
Make family a priority in 2018.
Your family wants your time more than any gifts or accolades.
Time is a fickle thing, don’t waste it working so hard that you forget about the people that want to spend time with you.

2018 is coming up…are you ready for it?
Stop making new years resolutions, instead start changing your habits.
No matter where you are in life you can always do more, be more and create more.
As Tony Robbins said, “Progress equals happiness. If you’re not growing you’re dying.”
Humans want to constantly learn, evolve and adapt.
Don’t settle for mediocrity in 2018, make it your best year by applying any or all of these habits to your life and watch it change.
